MARKET DRAYTON TOWN MATCH REPORT

A Dan Skelton goal gives the Blues the spoils in local derby

The Blues continued their recent good form with a well deserved 1-0 derby win at the Greenfields Sports Ground over local rivals Market Drayton Town via the unlikely source of Dan Skelton.

We were without the influential Jordan Evans and the holidaying James Rowland for today’s fixture, but when you’ve got strength in depth and can call upon Dan Skelton and Lyndon Campbell, these gaps were superbly filled today.

The crossbar was clattered in the 8th minute by Alex Hughes, with a vicious strike that deserved more than it got, especially as the keeper just looked on, probably in awe of the shot ;-) As the half progressed, the Blues created more openings and were twice unlucky as Kieran Evans and Joe Care tested the Town keeper. There was a let up on 39 minutes, as the travelling Red Army screamed for a free kick after a challenge on Jud, the referee waved play on. Drayton broke free through Jack Howse and luckily for the Blues, the post kept the score line level at the break

The second half was barely 4. Inures old when the Blues broke the deadlock through Dan Skelton, although Joe Flory will get the plaudits for his assist, coming initially from an exquisite piece of control by Joe which saw him glide past his defender and put a slide rule pass across the 6 yard box to Skelton, and Dan wasn’t going to miss from there!!

Flory was a constant thorn in the side of the Town defenders, who simply couldn’t deal with his speed and strength and Joe was unlucky on several occasions, being able to get into a good crossing or shooting position, but either the keeper saved well from him or his teammates

The final whistle blew, much to the delight of the away fans, who must’ve outnumbered the home fans 3 to 1 that much it felt like a home game and cheered the lads off with a rightly deserved standing ovation

We can enjoy tonight, but thoughts will soon switch to Saturday when we travel to Leicestershire to face Anstey Nomads in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup, as we hope to create more history if we get through to the next round, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Luke and the rest of his team will ensure the lads are ready

MOTM Joe Flory
