A goal in each half from Whitchurch Alport extended their unbeaten pre season so far against a competitive Middlewich Town side.
Manager Luke Goddard gave starts to all the players who didnt start against Wigan Athletic midweek and it was soon 1-0 to the Reds when Joe Cuff charged down the centre half pinching the ball from him before slotting past the goalkeeper to give Alport the lead. It shouldve then been two nil minutes later when Arron Johns found himself through on goal, he rounded the goalkeeper but his shot into the empty goal lacked power allowing the Middlewich defender to clear for a corner. At the other end the visitors certainly offered their own threat especially through striker Rory Gorton whose physical presence kept the home defence on thier toes. It was very much Alport who enjoyed much of the possesion but they were wasteful in the final third. HT 1-0
Eight changes for Alport in the second period and in truth a simialr pattern to the first half with Middlewich looking organised trying to reduce clear cut opportunities for the home side. Excellent flowing football from the right back area switched through to Ricky Bridge then Lee Pickerill shouldve seen another goal but no one was on the end of the cross to finish off what wouldve been a superb team goal. Cuff was next to waste a great chance as Pickerill slotted him in on the right hand side but he lashed his effort well over. With the home side starting to look a little frustrated the visitors shouldve taken advantage of a defensive error but Dave Parton made a smart save at his near post to maintain his impressive pre season record. Finally on 80 minutes Alport got the second goal and what a goal it was! Marley combined with Twigg before delivering a cross into the box, Johns superbly overhead kicked the ball from 18yds over the reach of the goalkeeper to end the game on a high with a touch of quality from Alport. FT 2-0
Manager Luke Goddard`s thoughts:
"Today was always going to be a different challenge to our previous four games and thats what we wanted. We`ve obviously been rotating the side alot, so none of these games are going to be fluent due to the changes but the fundamental basics and values we are trying to get into the squad are setting in which is what we are after this pre season. Its a new squad and that takes time to gel but I`m sure the supporters can already see how together these lads are and how organised we can be. Ultimately since day one we promised to bring a competitive side here and despite the step up in league nothing changes we want Whitchurch Alport to be ultra competitive in every game they play in, I assure thats what will happen, we move onto a tough test this Tuesday against Cefn Druids"
